How to Get an Exposed Firearm Permit in California

If youGre a licensed security guard in California, obtaining an exposed firearm permit can be a game-changer for your career. Issued by CaliforniaGs Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), this permit allows you to carry a firearm openly while on dutyGsomething that can be essential in certain high-risk roles. Unlike a concealed carry weapon (CCW) license, this authorization is designed specifically for security professionals.

What is an Exposed Firearm Permit and What Is It Used For?

An exposed firearm permit gives a licensed guard the legal authority to carry a visible firearm while performing their duties. This visibility can act as a deterrent to potential threats and allows security professionals to protect clients, property, or events in situations where a heightened level of defense is required.

Typical uses include:

  • Executive and VIP protection
  • Event security and crowd control
  • Mobile and property patrol in high-crime areas
  • Guarding high-value assets or sensitive locations

In short, itGs not just about carrying a weaponGitGs about being trained, certified, and ready to use it responsibly in the line of duty.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for an exposed firearm permit in California, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Not be prohibited from owning or possessing firearms under state or federal law
  • Hold a current BSIS registration or license as a security guard, private investigator, alarm agent, or other qualifying role
